How Do Actors Prepare For Headshots?

When you’re dropping around $500 for a new acting headshot, it’s extremely important you come to your headshot photo session prepared. But say it’s your first time getting actor headshots, how should you prepare?

6 things actors can do to prepare for their headshot session:

1. Go on IMDB and search for TV shows or movies that you want to be sent out for. When you click on cast and crew you’ll be able to see all of the actors headshots. (Usually when they aren’t super famous yet) This is a GREAT way to figure out how to dress in your headshots, what emotions or poses to do, and specifically what type of headshots are actually booking actors credited work!

2. If you have an agent or a manager, TALK WITH THEM. Tell them you’re going to be doing a headshot session if they don’t already know and work with them to pre-approve every outfit and look you plan on doing. I’ve had so many clients not be in communication with their team because they get intimidated, but you have to remember THEY WORK FOR YOU.

3. Talk with your acting headshot photographer. Any great photographer will either help guide you through the process directly, or offer resources like pre-recorded videos and headshot examples for you to use to prepare. They will give you suggestions for hair and makeup, clothes, and poses. Lean on them for guidance.

4. Know exactly what you want out of your acting headshots. Are they commercial or theatrical or both? What are you going to use the commercial headshot for? What are you going to use the theatrical headshot for? Figure those things out. Paying for a headshot session without knowing what you plan on doing with the pictures is like paying for ad space on a billboard and having no clue what you plan to advertise.

5. References. Create a collection of inspiration images that will help you through the process. It’s always helpful to wander on Instagram and save pictures from other actors or photographers you like.

6. Relax. Don’t over think it. If you chose the right photographer, like me, then you don’t have anything to worry about! They will make you feel comfortable, relaxed, and make sure you have fun at your session.
