Kids Headshots

Make Your Child A Star

Two words: look & personality.

These are the two defining principles that influence whether or not your kid has a shot at building a career in acting or modeling when they’re little kids.

Do you notice your kid being energetic, outgoing, perceptive of emotions, understanding, and is constantly told is sooo cute and has a ton of personality? Then those are good signs that you might want to get your kid some headshots to start the process of their acting career.

How To Prepare For Kids Headshots

Kid acting headshots are only a little different than adult headshots. What’s the difference? Well for one thing every child matures at a different rate, so only you the parent know how ready your child is to get involved in acting and get their headshots taken.

The main difference between adult and kid headshot sessions is how much involved the parent will be. You and I will have to work together with getting your child prepared and ready for their session.

Watch this guide to learn what to prepare for.

 Kids Headshot FAQs

  • It depends on how long it’s going to be until they have them removed. If they’re going to have on braces for the next year, then still get their headshots taken. If they’re off in a few months, then wait until then. Productions need kids and kids typically have braces, so although it might be ideal to have them take headshots when their braces are off and since you’ll be getting new headshots done frequently, there is no reason for you to delay taking their headshots.

  • Most kids under 10 years old might not need makeup IF their skin is free of redness, pigmentation, discoloration, rash, etc. Usually on a production set they are likely going to have makeup on, so while it doesn’t hurt it’s a decision you as a parent have to decide.

For kids 10+ since the skin is developing and likely being exposed to external and internal changes, I recommend foundation makeup for both boys and girls.

  • Yes, that is fine, but make sure you bring glasses that have the lens removed. Glasses with the lens on create a lens glare (even the ones that say they are anti-glare) and will not be suitable for photos.

  • You can read my actor wardrobe guide here to get an understanding of the colors and types of clothes. It’s written for adults, but applicable for kids. Make sure you use your judgement.

  • That’s cute and not a problem. It shouldn’t dissuade you from taking headshots. That is a natural part of life. Plus, your kid can always smile without teeth to have as an option.

  • Now. Kids change constantly and the opportunities for child actors in TV and commercials are limited as they age out.

Example: Your kid is 11 years old and he looks younger. The role is for a 9 year old and he looks the part, however, in 2 years he’s going to 13 and look way older, so they can’t cast him for the role.

Kids can age out quickly and have to re-approach their careers as young teens or young adults. So the best time to get them started is yesterday.

  • 1000% every professional headshot is always retouched and kids also should be as well especially if they don’t wear makeup. Kids will still tend to have some stray hairs or smudges and blemishes on their face, so it is highly encouraged to have your kids headshot retouched.

  • Looks can mean 2 different things: It can mean look as in different outfits or it can mean the character look, the actual expression + the outfit that each photo has.

Example: kid is wearing the same outfit (one look), but in one photo he is laughing and in the other he looks like a smart guy. When we say “his look here…” we’re talking about the character he looks like.

  • I would say 1-2 times a year. 2 times if they start the year off with a certain hairstyle and look and then 6 months in they have a completely new hairstyle and look.

You want to update their headshots anytime they look different and kids can change pretty rapidly even within 6 months.

Budget every year out for at least 2 headshot sessions is my recommendation.
